Friday, February 1st was my first taste of shooting a news package. I am definitely more of a sports reporter than I am news related but I wanted to expand my interests and potentially open new doors for me. The opportunity to shoot a news package over a breast cancer survivor and her daughter was a story that I was passionate about. My grandmother is currently going through breast cancer so when I heard of the opportunity I jumped at the chance.
I wanted to go out and attempt to shoot this package on my own because that is what my first job will most likely entail, myself shooting a package. I got down to the rink and set up the interview with the daughter/hockey player of breast cancer survivor. She was a great interview but she looked straight at the camera while I was asking questions, my first mistake. I then interviewed her mother which was another great interview; I feel I asked strong questions and the shoot turned out well. The B-roll to me was the hardest part because it was a personal story over a family overcoming breast cancer. I wasn’t sure to what to shoot because there was a similar package over the event and I didn’t want to overlap.
On Monday, I began to put together the package for the news which again was my first attempt. I knew that I would not struggle with the editing side of the package because I have done plenty of editing in the past. My worries were the writing aspect of the story. I am not journalism major and writing is not as strong for me as my on-camera and tech skills. I struggled a bit through writing the story, trying to make it as personal and emotional as I could to gain the viewers interest and are able to relate to it. With a little help, I finished writing the script. I wasn’t as pleased as I could be with it but I realize that this is my first attempt with a news package and I can learn from it. I recorded my audio and edited it all together in enough time to practice before we went live. We shot live and the package was a success.
After reviewing my first experience on-air introducing my first news package I can pick out where my strengths and where my weaknesses are and what I need to fix for the rest of this semester. I want to get to the point by the end of this semester where I have no problems writing a story for a package and can make it a compelling one. Even though my heart and passion is in sports I feel that it is beneficial to be well-rounded with news for my career. I enjoyed my experience doing my first package and I feel that it helped tremendously going out by myself and shooting the package. It helps me prepare beforehand for pre-production of the package and then interviewing and setting up for the actual interviews and B-roll.
