Throughout my first few weeks in the super semester I have had various experiences that some have been enjoyable and others have been stressful. I feel that these experiences are all helping me learn how to take on different duties.
My first package that I was able to do was over a breast cancer awareness game for hockey. I decided to go out and shoot this package myself because I wanted to know the experience of doing this by myself and knowing what the duties entail. I had no problems other than preparation before I went. I wasn’t sure of the shots I needed and I was a little held back during the interviews. When I began to put the package together for on-air, I realized that writing is not as strong as my on-air abilities. I have always been a sports fan and that just seems to be where my mind goes all the time. This problem can be fixed and I know that this is something that I will work harder for to better myself for my career.
The next thing that I have done in super semester was being the producer for a Friday show. This was a little stressful going into it because I only have a little time because the news is at 12:30 rather than 3:30. Nobody arrived into the station until about 9:30 to put stories and things up for the newscast. Once everybody showed up I told myself that my nerves and stress would stay at a minimum so I could make the newscast as good as possible. Luckily people were understandable and very willing to help me out. A couple went out to get video while I stayed on top of my checklist. The show started and I tracked the time and the show was 5 seconds to early of being right on 20 minutes. I was very impressed with myself and excited for how good I did on my first time.
The final thing that I have gotten to do so far during super semester was shooting someone else’s package for the news. I went out with one of the super semester students and shot her package on Sibley Day. I thought that this package turned out very well for my first time shooting one. I was proud of how all the shots were squared up and color corrected so appropriate for television. I was more outgoing with the interviews and asking strangers to be on camera. The package overall turned out well and I felt very proud of my camera work for this specific package and how it looked as a finished project on air.
I’ve loved anchoring and shooting packages, I have also loved putting together packages throughout my first three weeks of super semester. I have realized my weak spots and my strengths so far in this class. My goal is to by April to have mastered what I am weaker at so I can have strengths in a variety of roles in the news room.
