Qualities for Journalists
Debora Wenger’s blog about the top qualities for a journalist I feel would be a very reliable source to learn from while pursuing a career in journalism. Each part in the story is a highly touted aspect that most strive to have but the most important one I feel is the dedication. Journalism is a very tough career to pursue because it really is about whom you know and creating enough sources to retrieve the stories you need. I have had plenty of people tell me that this is not a 9-5 job; it requires weird times and a lot of commitments made to jumping on stories that appear at 11 in the evening. Sometimes that scares a lot of people but if you have a passion for it then there should be no issue.
Another one that I found interesting is desire. You really cannot do this job without the passion and desire to want to achieve something. Journalism is all about trying to outdo you and make yourself better. Personally, when I am in sports I like to watch how others create package ideas and do spotlights on stories on local athletes. I see how others construct their stories and I try to do something more creative and more interesting for the viewer. This goes for anyone trying to pursue a journalism career need this dedication so they can make themselves an inspiration to themselves and create a dedication and desire to become the greatest.
How To Create a Source
I like this article about how to create sources as a journalist because this is probably one of the toughest things to do when trying to become a successful journalist. Being able to have a numerous amount of people who let you know what’s going on in the community or somebody you can call up and they can inform you so you can get the story fast. When being a reporter your job is to find stories before anyone else does and that is the best way to do this, and fast. Meeting new people and showing your reliability will create a lot more trust going into your new position as a reporter. You move up quicker in this field by finding stories first and reporting on them. This article gives tips on how to achieve this task in the journalism world and be successful with it.
The tip that I find the most interesting would be making your name recognizable to people in the community. So many people have different stories and tasks throughout the community that they can inform journalists so they can get the story out in their media as fast as possible. Companies like to hire journalists who are friendly and able to build relationships with other people. To be the successful journalists that companies want, gain that friendship and outgoing mentality so that you are able to go out into public and build your credibility within the community and the company that is hiring you.
