Recently I worked on and finished package #2 for my super semester class. The first one was a bit of a challenge for me so I decided to take a different avenue for this one. A colleague of mine, Jessica Hartman was doing the same story on taxi zones on Main Street for her internship. I had heard about this story and thought it would make for a great news package for me, considering I have problems coming up with news stories.
So I had gone down to the area alone for the first time to get B-roll and footage myself. It had turned out okay but not what I had had in mind for this story. So luckily, Jessica and I went down to Main Street the next day together to get a few interviews and B-roll in the evening. Luckily, it was in the evening so this B-roll would be much better than mine.
Our first interview we did with RT Weiler’s bartender which went over very well. We both had questions to give and he gave us pretty strong answers. Next we walked around on Main Street when the people started to flow in and got numerous shots that would work out very well for this story. The next thing we were hoping would go our way were taxi’s showing up to pick people up. This story wouldn’t come into effect until later this month, so we were praying somebody would call a taxi. They did so that B-roll was helpful for us as well. A little nervous about it being dark and how our shots would turn-out, but that is something for post-production.
We returned to the station to start working on this story. I decided to work on the tough part first which was writing my story. This time I had a little help from Jessica coming up with some starting points on it but overall I finished a majority myself. The story turned out good, a few grammar mistakes and confusing sentences that I still need to tighten up but overall I am getting stronger in that field.
Another area I would like to tune up would be the use of my voice for the package. After listening to the first story I did, I just sound monotone and not exciting or compelling for the viewers. So I used a little more excitement while I was reading which at the end turned out nice.
Finally I got started on the editing portion which I feel is my strong point. I had finished the editing in under an hour with no mistakes so I was very proud of that. The only thing that turned out wrong were the shots, just a little too dark for television.
Overall, I feel I have made steps toward bettering myself with news packages. The next step I would like to take is to be able to write the story by myself. I will either rise to the challenge or fall under pressure. Either way I will become better because of it.
