I recently have received the opportunity to become an employee of KMOX radio through my internship with the St. Louis Blues.
I have been struggling over the past few months on the fear of what I am doing once I graduate in May. I decided that returning for my Masters is a great opportunity for me to better my future and keep doors open for different opportunities. Then the fear of Masters not working out came over me when that looked to be in question. I wanted to remain with my internship with the Blues because this is one of the greatest opportunities for me to obtain my dream job of broadcasting play-by-play for a hockey team. This requires practice and working alongside a professional such as Chris Kerber and Kelly Chase gives me plenty of lessons to learn as well as meeting other professionals in the field with connections to future employment.
Luckily, I have made such a lasting impression on Kerber and a few employees of KMOX that a producer spot opened up that they personally recommended me for. The excitement to be a paid employee for such a well-known company is just what I needed. The opportunity is there to work my way up from a show producer to possibly on-air talent one day. I would be working alongside professionals that have been in the sports broadcasting department for 20+ years as well as work alongside professional and well-respected teams such as the Blues and Cardinals.
This opportunity blesses me with the chance to leave a name for myself at KMOX as well as beef up my resume for the future.
Things seemed to work themselves out for me as my Master’s program has worked out to where I begin in the fall and will graduate in a year and a half with a degree in sports information. I will also remain as an intern for the St. Louis Blues for two more seasons to tighten up my broadcasting techniques for a possible demo reel for employment in the minor league hockey system. And I will be an employee for KMOX, a well-respected radio station with plenty of recommendations and strong points to have in my resume to achieve my goal of becoming sports broadcasters.
Over my time at Lindenwood I have worked with different sports which give me a variety of knowledge for when I begin at KMOX. Even though, it may not be working directly with sports, when a chance comes to have some air time I can be prepared enough and confident to know that as soon as I get on those air waves I will know what I am talking about and be able to move my name up in the broadcasting opportunities.
