Our guest speaker, Derek Mabie, joined our class to discuss online marketing. Derek is the founder of Evolve Digital Labs that he started himself. With Derek’s business, through search engine marketing agency he empowers customers through data and search for their company.
Marketing Is Dead
Evolve Digital Labs has a underlying strategy within the company that researches and provides strategies for companies that purchase Derek’s companies assistance. The company began to expand when more people got better at realizing this part is crucial to their business and their became different paths to marketing. Derek explained that door-to-door marketing is dead, people want marketing to come the easiest way possible and that’s the internet. They will jump on Google to discover marketing ideas but don’t know where to go or what to do next, which is where Derek’s company comes into play (first thing I learned).
Am I Being Audited?
Another thing that I learned about the entire online marketing and search profession was involved with the actual marketing process. I understand that their was a strategy that goes into this profession and obviously growth, but the audit process that goes with the marketing. Objectives that go into the audit process included identifying the customers you will target with this search, the size of the market you will be competing with, the competition, “on-site” analysis which includes the website hits, and finally the cost of the online market which is what most businesses are concerned with.
Demographics Don’t Matter
Next thing that I was not aware of from Derek, was the demographics were irrelevant in this business. When you think of trying to advance a business it seemed that demographics are something that would be crucial to the advancement of the business. Trying to determine who would be your target and who is in the area you are researching and marketing to. “We don’t care who they are, just what they do” is the motto Derek relayed to us. A great saying to work this business by, because they should not care about who each individual is by a survey. All you care about is what they are doing so you know how to connect with them.
Know Your Role
The fourth thing that Derek enlightened our class on was the roles in marketing. Most would believe that this business is run by numerous different roles within a company. According to Derek, there are two roles in the online marketing the creator or the analyst. People are either able to create marketing strategies and ideas for online use or they are able to analyze statistics for company. All are very useful.
The final thing, and most important thing, was that Excel was a million dollar business. Derek made it clear that the geniuses that know how to run Microsoft Excel then businesses are more interested in your service. Excel users come by very minimal and they are always looking for that one person who knows everything about Excel and can run the entire application without any problems.
“I want math nerds or journalists” is what Derek believes are successful in this business. Understanding the process that goes into online marketing and research puts our class into perspective a little more. Understanding the use of all these research techniques makes the job listings for marketing research online a lot easier. With understanding the strategy that Derek put forward will help in understanding that internet web browsers use and what marketers are trying to do.
